Advantages of Owning a Self Hosted Blog

February 15, 2019 By Chuck Underwood 3 Comments

The other morning in my Facebook Group, someone asked if there is a difference between ‘blogging’ on Facebook and a regular WordPress Blog.

YES!

You OWN your blog!

And that is one of the main reasons I suggest people do NOT use one of the free blogging services out there, like blogger or wordpress (the dot com version)

Oh sure, if you’re just wanting to journal or maybe set up a simple page for a charity organization or something like that – sure. But if you ever hope or dream of making it a side hustle one day? Earning a little money? No way. Go the self-hosted route instead.

I OWN BNV (brand new vegan). As long as I pay for my domain name each year and pay my hosting, it’s mine. I even own the trademark for it.

Your ‘host’ is where your blog actually ‘lives’. BNV is actually living on a server in Sweden. Your ‘domain name’ (or your dot com) is what points to it.

So as long as you pay those 2 bills every year – nobody can take it away from you. I’ve read horror stories of people’s blogs on those free services just disappearing overnight. Those blogs belong to blogger, or whoever, not you.

Same with Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, whatever social media you may already ‘blog’ at. They can come and go, but your blog is yours.

Remember, there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

And because I ‘own’ BNV? It’s something I can pass down to one of my kids or grandkids one day.

What do I mean my pass down to them?

Believe it or not – BNV has EQUITY. I could actually SELL it and pocket close to 6 figures. (I wouldn’t dream of it – so no worries)

OR….I could leave it as is and just transfer the bank accounts to my kids. The money BNV makes is all passive AND automated so they would have an instant monthly income without having to do a thing. Even if they never wrote another recipe or blog post – BNV will generate income.

And as long as the internet exists, people are still interested, and that domain name and hosting bill gets paid – BNV will live on forever, along with its income.

THAT’S why you want to own your blog.

    Hi Chuck,
I’m still struggling to figure out how to get a ‘follow’ button to attach to SchmidlinAngusFarms.com. I can build a form and it shows a button, but followers do not get added. Any suggestions?
