Choosing Your Blog’s Niche

February 9, 2019 By Chuck Underwood 2 Comments

The SECOND thing you should do when starting your blog is to decide on WHAT your blog is going to be about and then choosing your blog’s niche.

So Step 2 is all about choosing and narrowing your topic to a fine, pinpoint focus.

As you can see in the photo – I have a food blog. There are also home decor blogs, organizational blogs (hopefully they spark joy), financial blogs, travel blogs, new mommy blogs – you get the idea.

Whatever topic you choose, it should be something you are truly passionate about. Something you would have no trouble talking about with your friends for hours! Something that would make you excited to get up in the morning and go tell as many people as you can about…

So let’s say that topic is food, like mine. You love to cook, or all your friends tell you what an amazing baker you are, or you just love talking about your new diet.

First of all, realize there are literally hundreds if not thousands of food blogs, so expecting your brand new food blog to rank in Google’s top ten right away is expecting a miracle.

In the beginning, you are going to be a very small fish in a huge ocean of food bloggers.

The idea now is to take that topic, whatever you choose, and narrow it down into a very small niche.

For example, I am a food blogger – yes – but I am also a vegan food blogger. And….to narrow it down even more – I am a ‘Whole Food Plant-Based‘ Vegan food blogger. And……I specialize in recreating comfort foods.

See what I did? I picked a topic, then narrowed it down to a very small but distinct niche. That way I can be a very BIG fish, in a little tiny pond.

So for your homework today, if you are just starting out, decide on one or two topics you would like to blog about. And then see if you can narrow it down to a specific niche.

Maybe you want to start a travel blog, so try narrowing that down to just traveling within America, or maybe visiting all of America’s lighthouses, or traveling and living in an RV…

You get the idea.

Please be sure and leave comments as I would love to hear what you decided!

More to come so stay tuned.

    Hi Chuck
I’ve started the process, but have not launched my blog yet. I had to set it aside while I dealt with my gluten issue. The good news is that it is helping me pinpoint a niche!….plant based and gluten free. I’m looking forward to this group!

Awesome! Glad you’re here and it sounds like a very good niche! Good luck!
