So far we have thought about WHY we want to start a blog and decided WHAT it was going to be about. And then in the last post, we narrowed down all our options to pick the perfect domain name.
Next, I’ll walk you through Choosing Your Host and Buying Your First Domain Name.
So first off – what exactly is a host and why do we need one?
Your blog is nothing more than a collection of files. We will get into the actual installation of WordPress soon, but understand it’s nothing more than a collection of files, images, and databases that reside on a hard drive somewhere.
Not just any hard drive, like the one in your own personal computer, but a server. A very fast computer with tons of storage space and a very fast internet collection.
Our own personal computer simply could not keep up with the thousands of visitors your blog will get one day. So we pay someone else to ‘host’ our website for us, meaning they take care of all of the file storage and access.
My own personal website sits on a computer somewhere in Sweden and is hosted by a company called WpOpt.
Other popular hosting companies you may have heard of are GoDaddy, HostGator, SiteGround, and the one I got started with – and the one I personally recommend for beginners ….
(Note: This post contains affiliate links, meaning if you make a purchase using the links I provide, I will receive a small compensation at no additional cost to you.)
The reason I like and recommend BlueHost to beginners is:
- they are very easy to get started with
- they have excellent support
- they are very inexpensive
- and lastly, they usually throw in a free domain name your first year.
Everything you need to get started, all in one convenient package.
I often tell people the biggest advantage of starting a business via blogging is its low cost of entry. My first year of blogging cost me under $50 – that’s it. And to me, that is very low risk
So let’s walk through the setup using BlueHost as an example.
Using the banner below – Click the green button. No worries – you haven’t bought anything yet. I’ll tell you when you’re about to, promise.
Next, you’ll see the screen below. Click the green GET STARTED button to advance to the next page.
Next, you are presented with a screen describing all the hosting plans that BlueHost offers.
Even though the BASIC plan for $3.95 may sound tempting, I’d personally go with the CHOICE PLUS plan myself. The BASIC plan is just very limited and you want as many unlimited options as you can.
Besides, it’s only an extra $2/mo. Keep in mind that when you do actually purchase your plan – you will be paying for an entire year.
Ok, once you click on the green SELECT button at the bottom of whichever plan you chose, you will advance to the next screen…
THIS – is the place where you can see if that domain name you came up with is available or not.
In this example, you can see where my first choice (bnb.co) was already taken. I tried bnb.com too… no luck with that one either.
So now I am going to check on another name I may use one day called bnblog.co.
You can browse the different extensions by clicking the drop-down list with the arrows to the right of the name…..remember….. a dot com is best. Sometimes I will use the .co extension though, especially when I use it with a
Success! It looks like bnblog.co is available!
Now it’s just a matter of filling out the form. Make sure and change the Account Plan I highlighted to 1 yr as it automatically defaults to three.
As you scroll down the screen….always uncheck the extras (more money) and then make sure you click the “I Have Read And Agree….” box at the bottom.
THIS IS IT! This is where the rubber meets the road. So make DARN sure everything is filled out correctly and that you have the correct domain name entered.
I also want to make sure you realize this introductory price will only last for your first year. The annual cost WILL go up for after your first year.
Ready? There’s no backing out after this……
If you are absolutely sure everything looks good…..go ahead and click that green SUBMIT button.
And…..BOOM! You just bought yourself a domain name with 1 year of hosting.
And now you are well on your way to becoming a brand new blogger! Excited? Trust me – it only gets better from here!
Congrats on taking the first step! The adventure awaits!
LET’S DO THIS!
