One thing many Brand New Bloggers don’t think about when setting up their blog – is branding. In this post, I want to give you some ideas on how to start thinking about Creating Your Brand, and why it is so important.
First off, what do I mean by branding.
Branding is simply a marketing practice where you choose various elements of your blog, to identify yourself easily.
Here are a few examples of branding elements within a blog:
- your logo
- the fonts you use
- the colors you choose
- the music you choose for your youtube intros
- a particular icon, or symbol
- you get the idea
So looking at Brand New Bloggers, you can easily see that I use a logo with the little symbol of a camera shutter.
I also chose the color blue as my main color, and not just any blue – but a very specific shade of blue. It’s not that the shade that’s important here, but rather that you KNOW what shade it is.
Let me show you one way you can find the exact color of anything fairly easily.
ColorZilla is a free app for Google Chrome that once installed, will live up in your toolbar for easy access. Simply click it and select anything on your screen to find the exact color.
See the example below, I clicked the little eyedropper tool (see arrow) and then placed the cursor over the dark blue border of my website and it shows me the Hex Color Code is #2D3E6D.
THAT is what you want to write down, once you find a color you like. And I mean – get a sticky note and write those numbers down.
Trust me you will thank me later.
Because that way you can replicate that exact same color no matter which program you are using. You can then also choose that exact color in your WordPress Options to make that the color of your header text, link colors, etc.
I used that color to create my logo and to ‘color’ the camera shutter in my logo (as it was originally black and white). I then went on to create the header (the blue bar across the top) using the same color and to color the button you see that says LET’S GO.
It may not seem like much, but keeping a consistent color scheme across all of your WordPress posts, logos, buttons, FB logos, etc. is the first step in creating a recognizable brand.
The dark green on my Brand New Vegan blog is another example. I started with that early on in my blog to help create my brand – and now that logo is very easily recognizable.
If you have listened to any of my YouTube Videos or Podcasts, the music you hear was chosen for the exact same reason – branding.
Many of you have seen my Pinterest Photos –
All of these little design elements will create your brand.
Your job now, is to decide what that branding will look like. Try PicMonkey.com or Canva.com if you haven’t already. Play with colors, play with the fonts, and see what catches your eye.
And when it comes down to designing a logo – take a look at Fiverr.com.
There are hundreds of design artists there who would be happy to help you design the perfect logo for a very inexpensive price.
Once you find one or two colors you like, have settled on a logo, and selected your fonts – make sure you use them in everything you post. Before long people will also recognize YOUR brand, and you will be well on your way to becoming a professional blogger.
