Here is another common mistake I see Brand New Bloggers make when first starting out. Here’s why you have GOT to Keep Social Media In Mind When Choosing Your Domain Name.
Ok what do I mean by that.
Let’s use my food blog as an example:
- My domain name is www.brandnewvegan.com
- My Facebook Page is www.facebook.com/brandnewvegan
- My Pinterest Name is www.pinterest.com/brandnewvegan
- My Twitter Name is www.twitter.com/brandnewvegan
- My Instagram is www.instagram.com/brandnewvegan
I used the SAME NAME for everything. See what I mean?
So let’s say you finally pick that perfect domain name and buy it. It took you weeks, but you finally found the PERFECT name.
You start setting up your blog and write a few blog posts and then you think to yourself, “I should probably set up a Facebook Page”.
And that’s when you realize your perfect domain name has already been taken by someone else. Maybe your name is not available in Facebook, or Instagram.
Now what do you do?!
You ever see those blogs that have one name for their domain (let’s use bestblogever.com), and then their FB Page is bestblogev23, and their Instagram is BBEver, and their Pinterest is MYbestblogever?
No bueno. How on earth do they expect people to find them?
And why is that so important you ask?
THE MAIN PURPOSE OFF SOCIAL MEDIA IS TO DRIVE TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOG
Think about it.
Your BLOG is where you make your income.
You can’t make any money from Facebook. And while you may get a sponsor to notice you in Instagram, you don’t make any money directly from Instagram. Same with Pinterest, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.
And even on YouTube where you CAN make money from ads, it still takes a while to build up enough followers before YouTube will allow it. (YouTube has certain conditions that have to be met before they allow you to turn on monetization).
So the PRIMARY purpose of Social Media, whatever platform you decide to use, is to drive people to your main blog.
Because THAT’S where the products, are, THAT’S where the ads are, THAT’S where your
Sure FB is also good for building community, no doubt about it. And Instagram is great for getting brands to notice you. But still – you want people to come to your BLOG, not just visit you on Facebook.
Right?
But if they can’t
My advice?
Research your chosen domain name and make sure it is available in ALL of the social media platforms first – preferably BEFORE you buy it.
If it IS available….
Go ahead and sign up for that name is ALL of the platforms, even if you don’t think you’ll use it.
You may not think you need Twitter – but get the name now while you can….just in case. Because chances are – if you DO decide you need it later, it will be gone.
If it’s NOT available….
Whether it’s just one or more platforms, try to choose something as close as you can, and stick with THAT name with all of your platforms.
For example, if
Remember, you’re not just building a blog here….
You’re also building a brand.
Good luck!

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much
about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few
pics to drive the message home a little bit, but other
than that, this is excellent blog. A fantastic read.
I will definitely be back.
Right now it appears like WordPress is the top blogging platform out there right now.
(from what I’ve read) Is that what you’re using on your blog?
Yes
Do you know of a site that can tell you if your name is available across social media platforms?
Now THAT, would be handy! Unfortunately, no I do not.
Nice blog here! Also your site loads up very fast!
What web host are you using? Can I get your affiliate link to your host?
I wish my web site loaded up as fast as yours lol
